Mighty Grrl Movement

We believe in empowering young girls to find their voices and teaching them to harness the strength they already have within them. We believe in developing strong bonds of sisterhood and lifting others as we grow. That is why 25% of the profits of every t shirt sold will be donated to a charity or organisation that supports and empowers girls, women and the LGBT+ community.

Mighty Grrl Movement was started as an extension of the work I (Lauren) do as a primary school teacher and self-appointed ‘Mighty Girl Leader’ running my female empowerment group for 9-11 year olds.

Research shows that girls’ self-esteem peaks at 9 years old and this is why I started a Mighty Girl club that aims to empower girls and build their self-esteem through arts and crafts, learning about women’s history, learning about their own cultural history, fundraising and philosophical discussions.

As an adult who works with children, I believe ‘If they can see it, they can be it.’ Children, particularly girls and children of colour, need to see themselves reflected in the media they are consuming to understand their importance and value in the world.  As the website grows, there will be a space for book and film recommendations and reviews (by kids and adults!) as well as the chance for parents, teachers and youth workers to share resources and lesson plans to help empower the young girls they love and work with.

I chose the name ‘Mighty Grrl Movement’ as a tribute to the feminist punk movement, Riot Grrrl, which helped me find my voice as a young woman using music, writing and fashion to express myself. I am hoping this will be more than a website; I hope the girls who find themselves identifying as Mighty Grrls become a powerful movement and grow up to take over the world!

If you’ve ever met a child, then you’ll know that no two children are built the same and that is why we’ve removed the size labels from our clothing.

Instead, we’ve named them after three of our favourite Mighty Grrls: Maya Angelou, Mia Hamm and Malala Yousafzai.

Currently, we carry three sizes aimed at girls from around 9 to 14 years old but may look to expand our size range in the future if there is the demand.

If, for any reason, you are unhappy with your Mighty Grrl Movement purchase, we accept returns and exchanges within 14 days of you receiving your item. Just drop us an message via our contact page.
